I'm here too!
Hello everyone,
I thought I had better do a post too so that you don't all think Alice is out here adventuring on her own! However, I do need Alice to sit next to me and remind me of everything we have done!!!
Well, yesterday we started by going to Penang's tallest tower and largest shopping complex, KOMTAR, which stands for Kompleks something Abdul something something! Anyway, it was just lots of boring western shops and Alice was quite tired so we left quite soon. The afternoon however was much more exciting because we went on a trip up Penang Hill, stopping at Kek Lok Si temple on the way. The temple was beautiful with such wonderful intricate statues and decorations. However, to get there we had to duck and dive through a maze of stalls with people thrusting t-shirts and tacky waving cats in your face (was worthy of the final round of Gladiators!) But once you got there it was worth it. Once you had completed the souvenir obstacle course you reached a pond full to the brim with turtles, big ones, small ones, skinny ones, fat ones, I'm talking THOUSANDS!!! This pond upset me a little as the turtles didn't look to be enjoying their time there, and added to their fury of swimming round and round and climbing over each other, the buggers called this prison... LIBERATION POND!!!
And on to Penang Hill, this journey included a couple of bus journeys (the bus drivers here are very helpful!) and then a very steep train ride up the hill. The views from the top were AMAZING! We could see right over to the mainland and beyond, really cool. We were going to stay for dinner at the hotel at the top but it was really pricey and not that good so we came back down and ate from a Hawker stall on the side of the road, dinner for only 16p, great!
Then came today. Our first beach day. We took a bus (I should say, a shell of a bus) out to Batu Ferringgi at the North of the island. It is quite a touristy area full of big hotels, but was pretty quiet at this time of year. We took a stroll down the beach for a while, had a delicious kiwi and crushed ice drink (to share of course!) At this point I should say that Alice is trying to tell me to write about scenery etc... but I know that really you just want to hear about what I have been eating!!!
So, after our kiwi drink we had a nice cheap lunch (rice, veg and noodles) sitting next to an English family having a feast of beans on toast and pancakes (local delicacies you know!) then I had an ice cream and we headed back.
So there you go. Now you can rest assured that I am here and Alice hasn't eaten me! But I am doing a good job of eating my way around Malaysia.
Speak to you all soon.
