The Bright Lights and The Big City

We have arrived in KL!

We decided to stay an extra day in the Cameron Highlands after we did the countryside tour in order to do some adventuring. We followed one of the trails around the main town of Tanah Rata. It was supposed to be the easiest trail but I still barely made it all the way, only with a bit of motivation from Ben and his insistence that the view was worth it! On the way we met a weird cross eyed man who came up to us and told us he was the nature guide for the area and to prove it he crushed a dried leaf into my hand and said 'Nature, nature' a few times. We were not convinced. But we asked him the way and he was right. Later on we saw him asleep in a shelter along the path. The main path was OK but we had to climb up quite a steep trail in order to get to the watchtower. Eventually we got there and we could see all around the valley. There was a huge quarry which we could hear working on one side and on the other there was part of a tea plantation.

The Hostel up in the Highlands was in a very nice location up on a hill but the staff were quite unhelpful. Everywhere else we have been, the staff have been really really friendly and helpful, especially in Penang, but here it seems more about making money than helping anyone.

Yesterday we got the express bus from Cameron Highlands down to KL. We spent last night in a hostel called the Travellers Lodge but we have now moved to a cheaper and nicer one over the road called Wheelers. It reminds me of when Sarah and I stayed in Flagstaff, Arizona and hung out at Wheelers house!

Conclusions on KL so far: Cars. Cars everywhere. EVERYWHERE! It's really hard to cross the road, even if there is a crossing and even if the crossing is green, you still have to run for your life because the cars and especially the motorbikes don't care if there is anyone in front of them - they go anyway. Its quite scary! We are staying right next to a chinese night market so it is very easy to find good food. That's if you can make it past the hundreds of stalls selling pirate DVDs. There is literally another stall every 2 metres.

Today we went to the Petronas towers and had a look at them. Very tall. But I think you might have known that bit already. We went to the cinema in the afternoon and watched The Constant Gardener which is excellent and if you haven't seen it already you probably should.

It is getting quite late (for us) so I think we will probably go to bed now. Goodnight.
