Perth

We've gone and left a big gap between posting again, Doh! Last you heard Alice was sick and we were wondering if we would ever leave Borneo, well thankfully we did get out and made it to Oz.

On the 21st we had a pretty horrific days traveling to get us here. We had a flight from Tawau (Borneo) to Kuala Lumpur, then a flight from KL to Singapore, then Singapore to Perth! All in one day with about 1hr between each one in which to check our luggage off and on over and over!!! There were some dodgy moments when Alice was clinging onto her sickbag during turbulence, but she never actually puked! Then we were kindly picked up by Jez and his girlfriend Beth at 1 in the morning on the 22nd.

Good news after spending so much more money on new flights is that Jez is letting us stay at his while his housemates are away for Christmas, so we are saving quite a bit on accommodation.

The 22nd was a pretty slow day, we just hung around looking through our photos on Jez’s computer and he showed us some of the work he has been doing over here, very impressive. In the evening we went out to a Christmas party at a lovely big house called the Vines about an hour out of Perth. Met lots of nice people and played MarioKart and Mario Soccer for hours. Also had a look at someone’s Nintendo DS which we really want to try and buy cheap in Japan. Suckers!!! I do hope we have some money left for Japan; there is so much I want to buy!!!

Another lazy day on the 23rd! Had a little wander around Subiaco and Perth before heading out to Beth’s Mum’s house for a barbeque. Everyone here is being so hospitable, it is really nice. Alice was in bed by about 8 because she has been very tired since we arrived in Perth, the food poisoning really knocked her for 6.

Surprise Surprise! Another lazy day on the 24th! It is really nice to be living a different sort of lifestyle here then we were around Malaysia. It is like being back home again! We went out to a gig in the evening with Beth’s friends and family. The bands we saw were pretty good but we didn’t see many because we found a nice table outside and were reluctant to move! Outside on Christmas Eve!?! Madness! As far as Alice and I are concerned the weather has been great so far but in actual fact it is unseasonally cold at the moment. Got down to 8 degrees C the other night, coldest December evening in 120 years!

Hello, it’s Alice now, Ben needs a break from writing such an uberlong entry… On Christmas Eve we all stayed at Jez’s house and in the morning Beth drove us out to her Mum’s place where we all helped make food. We sat in a big circle and opened presents – Beth’s mum even got something for Ben and I so we didn’t feel left out : ) (They were stubby holders by the way.. but big enough to hold our water bottles and also clip to your belt). We had an amazing dinner – ham, turkey, rolls, potato salad, pasta, everything really yummy. Then we were all too full for pudding so we went and dipped our feet in the swimming pool and enjoyed being warm on Christmas day! In the evening we played lots of N64 games and then Trivial Pursuit and Scattergories. Proper Christmas fun.

On boxing day we just came back to Jez’s and had a quiet day. Wandered up the road to find some food as there was nothing here and the only place open was KFC yuck!

On the 27th Ben and I got up slowly and wandered down to the supermarket to buy some food so we didn’t have to eat scummy KFC anymore. Good move I think. In the afternoon we went to watch Narnia but it was a bit lame. In the evening Ben’s mum came to pick us up and we went over to her sister’s house where they are staying. Luckily Rose (Ben’s aunt) lives in the next suburb to Jez so it is really easy to get there. We had another Christmas dinner at Rose’s house where we pulled crackers and ate candy canes. We opened presents and gave them the sweets we had bought them for Christmas. It was a very nice evening and it was great to see people from home and to meet Rose.

The next day we made a picnic and met Jez in town where we got the bus to King’s Park. Free bus! All buses in the city are free!! We thought it was about time we did some of the sights of Perth as we have just been hanging out here for ages... We climbed the DNA tower and flew Ben’s gliders from the top. We met Di, Lowri and Matty and Beth and played Frisbee for a while. Beth dropped us home for Jez, Ben and I to get ready to go and see her brother’s band but then we all got too tired so we stayed in and watched an Aussie comedy DVD and Robots.

On the 29th (I can’t believe this is December!) Diana picked us up and we went up to the hills to the Cahunu Koala Park. It was very hot and dusty but really fun. Matty and Lowri were really scared of the Geese and the Emu because they kept following us to get the food. Di brought Ben to this park when he was 5 and an Emu chased him and stole his bag of food over his shoulder so they were worrying that was going to happen to them! We fed Kangaroos and saw the cute Joeys in their pouches. We also saw Wombats and Dingoes and talking Parrots who said things like “Allo Darling,” “How are you?” and “Whatcha doing?” They were really funny as there were loads of them and they all talked quite a lot. One said “Hello Di” which was quite impressive as we hadn’t told it her name… Lowri cuddled a Koala and we all stroked it. He was called Eddie and he was really soft and cute and fuzzy. I liked him a lot but it was lots of money to hold him so I just stroked him.

In the evening we went to dinner at some friends of Rose’s that Di knows from having lived in Perth for a while. We had another gorgeous dinner and managed to shock all the Aussies by telling them that Brussel Sprouts are considered an essential part of Christmas in the UK, despite the fact that no one likes them. They were very surprised as they have, sensibly, dropped them from the dinner over here. We had some more little pressies from Santa (thanks Santa : )) and after dinner we played Articulate which was really fun except that Ben’s team won. Grr. Hehe.

Yesterday (you are nearing the end now I promise), we went to Fremantle Prison with the family in the morning which was very interesting. I would like to go back and do the torchlight tour another time. The tour guide was really funny and he managed to put Matthew in the children’s prison, hang Lowri from the gallows and whip Di with a Cat ‘o Nine Tails. Quite impressive. After leaving Fremantle, we met Jez at Cottesloe and had a beach afternoon. The waves were really powerful and both Matty and Lowri got dumped by them. Jez and Ben did some boogie boarding but I decided to stay on the beach and enjoy the sunshine. I had a book called ‘Doomsday – 50 visions of the end of the world” which I felt it was important to finish reading.

Today we are going to go and watch King Kong and then head back up to the vines for a New Year’s Eve party. I hope everyone who has got this far has a great New Year’s Eve and enjoys 2006! Especially Caroline because I am rubbish at replying to emails, sorry…

Lots of Love
Alice and Ben xxx

Hello! Sorry I haven't commented before, it is because I am a worthless piece of shit. Anyway, happy new year!

Your travels sound lots of fun, food poisoning and other minor mishaps aside. It's good to know that Jez is still alive.

For some reason Finch has come on on my iTunes so I thought of you (bad emo you see! ;0p) Today I am hating London and its coke fiends and want to get away superlots. This happens every so often, but I always like it again when I come back. So hopefully I'll find somewhere to go soon and get it out of my system.

Anyway, have an exotic drink on me you slags.
