Sydney!
We have just arrived in our hostel in Sydney after our lengthy train journey from Perth. It was quite an experience spending so long on a train. The daytimes were fine as I could quite happily stare out of the window for hours, the scenery was stunning. But the nights were pretty awful because we were just in semi-reclining seats. We made an effort to stay awake as late as we could so we were exhausted enough to collapse and sleep in any position, it kinda worked!! There were bodies all over the place down the train, it was quite an obstacle course to get to your seat, leaping over legs and heads poking off the sides of seats, it was very funny!
We made a few stops along the way and did whistlestop tours of a couple of towns called Kalgoorlie and Broken Hill. They are both mining towns in the middle of the desert. In Kalgoorlie we saw the 'SUPERPIT' the biggest open mine in the world, (you can see it from space). There were giant vehicles bigger than houses that looked like little dinky toys from the side. We did the tour at night but the mine is floodlit because it runs 24hrs (it's a goldmine by the way).
Anyway, 70hrs of train journey later we arrived in Sydney and are about to head off for a little wander. We are probably going to see an exhibition on animatronic monsters in films tomorrow (sounds great) and then join in the Australia Day celebrations in the afternoon and evening!
The hostel we are in at the moment is much nicer than the underground. It is smallish but there are corridors going off all over the places and all sorts of rooms in places where you wouldn't expect them. Most of them are in the actual building though unlike ours which is a caravan in the backyard! It is a shabby old thing but it has a double bed, a fridge, a tv, a table and chair and it's all to ourselves at dorm prices. And there is free internet on proper computers at broadband speed! (not in our caravan unfortunately :P) Anyway I'm blimming knackered after not sleeping properly for 3 nights so I'm off to cosy up in our caravan. And put earplugs in cos of the people sitting in the yard having a party :P hehe
