What does SCUBA stand for? Answers on a postcard..

Sorry it has been a while since the last update, time flies when you’re having fun!

New Year’s Eve was great fun; we went to see King Kong in the afternoon, which I thought was wonderful!!! Really enjoyed it! Then we went out to The Vines (big house surrounded by vineyards) and had a little party. There were only about 10 of us but we had lots of drinking fun, Alice headed to bed about 2ish but a few of us stayed up till 7:30 hoping a shop round the corner would open so we could have bacon for breakfast…. unfortunately it was not to be!

On the 1st we rose slowly and headed for a Dim Sum lunch. Alice stayed at the Vines because she was too tired. After returning we played lots of computer games and had a relaxing drink in the garden. Alice spent a while uploading ALL of the photos from our camera, all 2000 odd!!! They are on flickr if you want to look, but be warned, they are not organised yet! We couldn’t get back into Perth that evening to meet Mum and the kids as planned so stayed another night at the Vines.

2nd Jan started with a mass tidy to get the house looking respectable because Josh’s Dad was coming to pick something up. Once he had left we headed out for the most amazing lunch ever! We went to a wine tasting place for a Ploughman’s Lunch, we ordered three big platters between us all and ate and drank free wine to our hearts content!!! I even ate cheese, in fact I ate quite a lot of cheese and have now taken to Brie, Camembert and Red Leicester! Clever me! If that lunch wasn’t enough we then headed to Lancaster vineyard for some more wine tasting (gotta love that free booze!) and to top it all off we went to a chocolate factory! Chocolate ‘Factory’ is maybe going a little far, essentially it is a chocolate shop with a few windows into the kitchen! But they do have lots of free samples, so we were happy! Great Day!!!

We were meant to be leaving Perth and catching the train to the East coast on the 4th of Jan, but our plans are changing slightly now. Because of Alice’s horrible food poisoning incident in Borneo she missed all of the diving and therefore was desperate to complete the course. So, we made the decision to delay our trip over East and sacrifice some stops on the way over there. It is a shame that we wont get to see all we wanted to but we are both eager for Alice to complete the course so we can dive together. Jez has also decided that he wants to do the course which is nice for Alice.

When we were looking to dive in Borneo there was only one certified place to do it in the town, but here there are loads. So we spent a lot of the 3rd ringing around to find somewhere to do it. It seems that all the dive shops here take a lot longer to do the course than in Borneo so we are going to have to hang around a lot longer than we planned. Most courses run Mon-Thurs which would mean staying AGES but after talking to lots of people we managed to get onto a course a little more in our timeframe. We met up with Beth after work and went for Fish and Chips in Fremantle and then went for a scenic drive round King’s Park and Perth.

Early start on the 4th because Alice and Jez had to have their really expensive medical to allow them on the dive course (Oz rules) In Borneo we just had to say we were fine and sign away all our rights, here you have to spend 30 pounds having a full medical. Anyway, I went along and sat in the waiting room for 2 hours, fun! They passed by the way. Oh, and Jez had to have to testicle-cupping ‘cough’ test which amused me very much! Alice didn’t need that one! (As I am writing this Jez is sat in the room and has just thrown a pen at the ceiling, which hit the fan and came flying back at his head, giving him a big cut above the eye! Idiot!)

On the 5th we had a lazy morning due to the ridiculous heat, about 37 degrees C. In the afternoon we headed to Scitech (science museum) where we learnt lots of sciencey things we already knew! It was good fun, but aimed very much at kids.

I shall pass you over to Alice now as she wants to tell you about the diving she has been doing! Mainly I have been resting and wandering around a lot!!!

Hello hello, I’m taking over. These entries are getting really long and increasingly sporadic aren’t they… On the 6th, we managed not to do anything at all for the whole day cos it was too ridiculously hot again. Beth picked us up when she finished work and we went back to her house to get in the pool. We cooked a BBQ and had lots of yummy food and then went and got in the pool with some champagne and beers and stayed there until about 11pm having a most enjoyable time. It’s a cool little pool with bubbles that you can switch on to have a kind of spa thing.

Yesterday Jez and I started our diving! Hooray! It was so much fun. It is fantastic being able to breathe underwater. Another member of our group was a bit nervous and kept shooting to the surface which actually helped me feel a bit more confident. Beth picked us up and we had a repeat of the night before as it was still so hot.

Today we were back in the pool again. We did some harder skills but it didn’t take as long because we were all a bit more sure of ourselves underwater. I’ve been enjoying it so much, I can’t wait to get in the river tomorrow. While I am under the water, it isn’t tiring at all because everything is buoyant in the water (except the blimming weight belt!) but when you get out of the water you have to heave your weight belt onto the side and then try to get out of the water with your tank on your back. This and getting your wet suit on and off are the hardest bits of all. So I’m pretty knackered but very happy and enjoying it a lot.

Hello again monkees.

Diving is ace and fun. Just don't drown, mmkay? I haven't been for fucking ages and have forgotten everything, but I do remember it was rather wicked and well worth getting those award thingies. If you do the advanced course thingy you get to do a night dive and (I think) a wreckage, which are super. Damn I really wanna go to Japan, it's really ace and I didn't get a proper look round when I was over there last.
